Description
This handy little gadget has a freely moving Alnico (AlNiCo) bar magnet mounted in a freely moving plastic oval mounted in a plastic wand. Bring the pole finder close to any other magnet (the source) and the bar magnet will move to indicate which pole of the source magnet is closest to it.
When the BLUE end points to the source magnet, it is indicating that the closest face of the source is NORTH.
When the RED end points to the source magnet, it is indicating that the closest face of the source is SOUTH.
This makes it an essential gadget for many industrial uses including the manufacture of pumps and guitar pick-ups. It is also believed (although unsubstantiated) that magnets used for magnetic therapy should have the south pole facing into the body.
The free movement allows the Alnico bar magnet to rotate through the x, y and z axes as the pole finder is moved around the magnetic source. This also makes a great classroom demonstration of the 3D nature of magnetic fields.
