This is a low cost, C8 ferrite pot magnet, widely used for a variety of holding or anchoring applications. The large ferrite disk is housed inside a steel shell which focuses the magnetism down to the exposed surface of the magnet. The poles of ferrite magnet are on the flat faces so that one flat face will be north and the other south.

Ferrite magnets are also known by the name Ceramic or Strontium Ferrite magnets. Strontium (chemical symbol Sr) is element number 38 on the periodic table. This means it is an alkali earth metal. Ferrite magnets are manufactured by compressing an Iron Oxide and Strontium Oxide powder and then sintering at high temperatures.
