Salt Dough Fridge Magnets

Easter Holidays are coming! Why not try making Salt Dough fridge magnets with the children this holiday?

  • 500g (1 lb) plain white flour
  • 250g (8 oz) salt
  • 235ml (8 fl oz) cold water
  1. Pre-heat the oven to 1000C or gas mark 3.
  2. Place the flour and salt into a large mixing bowl and mix together.
  3. Stir half the water into the dry mixture and mix with your fingers.
  4. Draw the dough together and keep adding a little more water until the dough is soft enough to knead.
  5. Continue adding the water, bit by bit, until the dough is firm enough not to stick to your fingers, but not so dry that it is crumbly.
  6. Lightly dust a smooth surface with flour and turn the dough out onto it. Knead the dough for at least 10 minutes until it is smooth, pliable and gently warm from the heat of your hands.
  7. Roll out to about 0.5cm thick.
  8. Using pastry cutters, cut out shapes from the dough and put them onto a baking tray.
  9. Bake for around 1½ to 2 hours or until the dough is dry.
  10. Decorate using paint, pva glue and glitter (or anything else!). When dry, use a clear varnish to seal your salt dough and then affix a magnet to the back.
Depending upon the weight of your salt dough, we recommend 14x3mm C8 ferrite disks or 20x3mm C8 ferrite disks.
