If your fridge is anything like mine, it’s probably covered in postcards that have been sent from relatives around the world. Currently decorating my fridge are postcards from Malta, USA, Germany and deepest darkest Wiltshire!
Keeping the postcards in place requires magnets, but we’ve had a bit of a brainwave – why not change the postcard into fridge magnets? That way, you not only get the benefit of the picture but you also get to use the picture to hold other things (like the children’s artwork) to your fridge at the same time.
You could make this using favourite photographs too.
You will need:
Laminator and laminating pouches (if you don’t have one, you can do a DIY lamination using sticky tape or tacky back plastic)
- Postcard
- Ruler
- Scissors or craft knife
- Guillotine (if you want really good straight edges)
- 2″ wide flexible magnetic strip
- Pencil and Pen
First, measure your card and decide how many pieces you want to cut it into. My card measured 10.5cm x 14.85cm so I decided to cut it into 6 pieces. Using a ruler and pencil mark the back of the card so you know where to cut after it’s laminated. This was going to give me size pieces each of which was 5.25cm x 4.95cm.
Laminate the postcard as per the instructions on the pouch and the laminator. Don’t forget that your lamination pouch needs to be slightly bigger than your card to form a seal all the way around. Using the guillotine to cut the card along the lines you’ve marked on the back.
Measure out pieces of flexible strip which are just smaller than the card so you cannot see them through the clear laminated edges. Our 2″ wide flexible magnetic strip is 5.04cm wide so I measured out 6 pieces each 4.7cm long and marked the back of the flexible strip with a biro. Cut the flexible strip with very sharp scissors or a craft knife.
You are now ready to assemble your pieces – peel back the pink/red backing on the flexible strip, align the magnet carefully to ensure it won’t be visible at the edges and then press the self adhesive down onto the back of the piece firmly.
Now you can put your magnets directly on your fridge! Each of my pieces comfortably holds 2 sheets of standard A4 copy paper onto our office fridge!
This can be adapted to make almost any picture into a fridge magnet, they also make lovely gifts. Why not try using smaller pieces with hand drawn wavy, wriggly edges to make a jigsaw?
